Tiffany was commissioned by Harlem Stage to bring to life her vision for a new work celebrating three Black, Queer, Female playwrights, Alice Dunbar-Nelson, Mary Powell Burrill and Angelina Weld Grimke’. All three women were colleagues and early practitioners of a queer black feminist theater aesthetic at the turn of the 20th century. Rights of Renaissance examines our collective expectations of artists of determinable backgrounds and how our personal interpretations of their racial, sexual, cultural, and national heritage affect our openness to accept, consume, and reward their artistic expressions. The work also addresses the lack of Non-European history taught in schools. Touching upon issues of acceptance, race, gender, and sexuality.
