Sounds of Hazel | World-Premiere in D.C.

Don’t miss the WORLD-PREMIERE of Sounds of Hazel, new ballet honoring American music icon Hazel Scott presented by Dance Theatre of Harlem and choreographed by our very own Executive Artistic Director, Tiffany Rea-Fisher.

Friday, October 7th @ 8:00PM
Saturday, October 8th @ 2:00PM & 8:00PM
Located at Sidney Harman Hall

Commissioned by Washington Performing Arts, the dynamic new work Sounds of Hazel honors the remarkable life and legacy of mid-20th Century Trinidadian-American piano recording artist, bandleader, and stage and screen star, Hazel Scott. The creative team includes DTH founding member and Artistic Director, Virginia Johnson, choreographer, Tiffany Rea-Fisher, and composer Erica Lewis-Blunt.

In Rea-Fisher’s words: “Hazel Scott was a diva with a capital ‘D,’ but she was also super-grounded. She was not afraid to be raw and rough while also being glamorous. Her erasure from history was intentional because she was so audacious. People actively tried to erase her…so to be able to not only not erase her but celebrate her for all that she is and was is really super-super exciting.”

We are so excited to see so many familiar and inspiring faces all in one room this summer!

JULY 11th - 23rd, 2022

About the series:

The EMERGING Artist Summer Series (EASS) a unique retreat-style summer intensive held in Lake Placid, NY at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts. EASS is a true extension of our commitment to continuing to reach the communities that we serve. This program is just that, an experience, one that will not only hone the participants body but also develop the dancer's connection to their mind and soul. Attendees can continue to look forward to the company's unique emphasis on cross training, by way of Pilates and H.I.I.T classes, while simultaneously furthering their technical skill with dance classes of various genres taught by our diverse group of company dancers. We will dive into thought provoking conversations by continuing to conduct Town Halls, Q&A sessions, and 1 on 1's with EMERGE125 Artistic Director Tiffany Rea-Fisher. All participants will receive affordable dormitory options, free lunch, a photoshoot, performance opportunity, and consideration for a possible apprenticeship with the company. This program is designed to help college-level dancers transition into their professional careers! We hope that upon completion participants will leave this experience feeling as though they've developed themselves as whole beings and not just a moving vessel.

EMERGE125 NYC Season

EMERGE125 returns to The Flea Theater and presents its inaugural season as a Resident Company of The Flea.

May 26th - 29th, 2022 at The Flea Theater

The upcoming season will be the company’s first season after announcing its name change in June 2021.

For the EMERGE125’s May 26-29, 2022 NYC Season, Executive Artistic Director Tiffany Rea-Fisher will present the world premieres of Behavioral Synchrony and Poly String Theory as well as two works-in-progress and a revival with a new opening. Both Behavioral Synchrony and Poly String Theory began when the company was relocated to Lake Placid, NY during the 2020 pandemic so they could continue making work while the city was shut down. Rea-Fisher started creating with only two things in mind; no full company pieces and pairing dancers in her company together who typically do not share the stage. From that, two world premieres were born.

Performances will take place:

  • Thursday, May 26th at 7:30PM

  • Friday, May 27th at 7:30PM

  • Saturday, May 28th at 2:30PM & 7:30PM

  • Sunday, May 29th at 2:30PM

LIVE @651ARTS Presents Black Dance Stories

651 ARTS presents the first in-person gathering for Black Dance Stories in a two-day presentation for both in-person and online audiences and featuring acclaimed choreographers Rena Butler, Reggie Wilson, Jamar Roberts, and our very own Executive Artistic Director Tiffany Rea-Fisher!

The artists will present solo work, engage in movement together, and take part in a lively discussion speaking to their experimental and investigatory practices. Conceived and co-created by Charmaine Warren, the Black Dance Stories series launched in June 2020 in response to Black dance artists’ need to talk about life during COVID-19 and support the Black Lives Matter movement. The series is consistent with Black artists’ tradition of finding a way to amplify their voices during turbulent times. When civil, moral, and social freedoms are challenged and stifled, Black artists find ways to use their talents as activism.

On April 1st, Black Dance Stories Live will host Jamar Roberts and Tiffany Rea-Fisher. Tickets are $25.

Anne Huang partners with Dance/NYC to curate and moderate an anti-racist dialogue that addresses recruitment, hiring, onboarding, board transformation and development, and has applicability across the entire non-profit field, which is so insidiously entrenched in white supremacy culture.
