Public Works' The Tempest

Tiffany Rea-Fisher, Artistic Director of EMERGE125, to Choreograph The Public Theater's The Tempest at The Delacorte Theater

7/24/23 City Life Org: The highly-in-demand choreographer Tiffany Rea-Fisher has been selected to choreograph The Public Theater's upcoming performance of Shakespeare's The Tempest as part of the organization's Public Works program at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Performances will take place from August 27 through September 3.

In the recent aftermath of the pandemic and in tandem with The Public’s decade-long tradition of bringing together a diverse ensemble of both professional and community members from across New York, this Public Works production of The Tempest examines what it means to be isolated and how we find our way back to one another. Featuring music and lyrics by Benjamin Velez (Borderline, John Leguizamo's Kiss My Aztec), and starring the Tony Award winner Renée Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton), this ambitious work of participatory theater explores the grief of being cut off from community, the desire for retribution, and the healing power of love.

This production also marks the first collaboration between Rea-Fisher and The Tempest's director, Obie Award-winning Director of Public Works Laurie Woolery. This meeting is particularly auspicious as both were recently cited as artists who "Should Have Been Nominated for a 2023 Tony Award" by The New York Times.

Tiffany Rea-Fisher recently spoke with New York Nonprofit Media about her experience with The Tempest:

I'm currently just finishing up choreographing the Tempest for public works that's running through September 3rd at the Delacorte and it was a cast of 85 people and the youngest turned five and our oldest is 80. There are five equity actors that hold it down with a professional band and the rest are community members. We have domestic workers, we have nurses, we have veterans, we have teachers, it's really not anything I ever thought I would see myself doing but it's been so rewarding and really wonderful.

A special shout out to EMERGE125 Company Members Alisa Gregory and Madelyn LaLonde for their passionate and dedicated work as Associate Choreographers for The Tempest. They have been assisting E125 Artistic Director and The Tempest choreographer, Tiffany Rea-Fisher and have done a tremendous job in bringing this production to life.

EMERGE125 participated in the production as one of the Cameo Groups. After 7 amazing performances we are so thankful to have be a part of this new adaptation of The Tempest.

A huge thank you and CONGRATULATIONS to Artistic Director, Tiffany Rea-Fisher, The Public Theater, and everyone involved in this incredible production!
