The dancers will be back in the Lake Placid Center for the Arts studios rehearsing H.E.R., a piece commissioned by Harlem Stage for the Centennial of the Harlem Renaissance. The premier was set for April, 2020 but was moved due to Covid-19 and is now being adapted as a film, set to take place in the streets and heart of Harlem, NY.
H.E.R. stands for Human Equality Required and is a dance exploration, retelling of a rediscovery of the plays of three Black female playwrights: Alice Dunbar-Nelson, Mary Powell Burrill, and Angelina Weld Grimke between 1915 and 1920. All three were colleagues and early practitioners of a queer black feminist theater aesthetic at the turn of the 20th century that had been lost to history until recently unearthed through renewed interest in pre-civil rights black artists.
